South Africa produces 511 million tonnes of carbon each year and is the 6th biggest polluter on the planet.

situation

Climate change is a global crisis that is caused by a build-up of CO2 in the atmosphere as a result of manmade pollution. South Africa is ranked 6th in the world for the highest emissions of carbon dioxide, releasing 1.5% of total global carbon dioxide emissions. It contributes to 40% of total carbon dioxide emissions in Africa alone. CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by trees but more than 99% of the world‘s natural forests have been destroyed. Climate change will impact negatively on every living specie within the next decade. Thousands of species (plants and animals) have already become extinct. Sea levels are expected to rise with catastrophic consequences. Water scarcity is expected to cause war within our life time.

problem

South Africa releases 511 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. Our country's carbon emissions have increased by 24% since 1996 from the consumption and flaring of fossil fuels. With so many major social challenges facing South Africa, our nation's carbon footprint has been overlooked. Most citizens and corporations don't have active plans to reduce carbon emissions. Very few people are aware of the fantastic carban sequesting abilities of Spekboom.  The demand for Spekboom to sequest carbon is high but large scale Spekboom nurseries are almost impossible to find.  On another note: South Africa's unemployment rate is 25.2%.

solution

Wonder Plant tackles poverty alleviation and carcon reduction by establishing Spekboom tree nurseries in townships, providing grassroots entrepreneurs with an outstanding way to generate income and simultaneously reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. Franchisees are taught to propagate Spekboom – the wonder tree native to South Africa that grows quickly, can be easily propagated from clippings, and is 10 times more effective per hectare at reducing carbon dioxide emissions than a tropical rainforest. Corporate clients offset their carbon footprint by paying Wonder Plant to plant Spekboom hedges around their office premises or at schools and parks. By working within impoverished communities and providing individuals with a chance to earn a steady income by growing Spekboom, Wonder Plant does its part to decrease unemployment in South Africa.
